Treatment options

A closer look at medication use reveals that many abdominal cramps sufferers may not be aware of the most appropriate treatment options for their symptoms.

There could be many possible reasons for this, including a lack of knowledge about the cause of their symptoms and being unaware of what treatment options are available to target their specific symptoms.

Consumer research has shown that over 60 per cent of sufferers treat their symptoms with analgesics and a quarter chose indigestion remedies. Just 5 per cent opt for specific antispasmodics that would target the underlying problem of spasm in the gut1.

Hyoscine butylbromide, the active ingredient in Buscopan® Cramps, is an antispasmodic that can be recommended for the relief of spasm of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as for symptomatic relief of IBS. It targets the cause of the abdominal pain, the spasm itself, and because it doesn’t cross the blood-brain barrier is unlikely to cause drowsiness2.

Buscopan® Cramps tablets are for oral administration only. Buscopan® Cramps tablets should be swallowed whole with adequate water.

Adults and children over 12 years: 2 tablets four times daily. For the symptomatic relief of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, the recommended starting dose is 1 tablet three times daily, this can be increased up to 2 tablets four times daily if necessary.
