Bloating

Abdominal bloating is a common complaint often blamed on excess gas in the bowel. It often occurs in people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) but may also be caused by rich, fatty foods, food intolerance or overeating

Key questions to ask

  • Does your abdomen feel full and tight?
  • Do you often have to loosen your clothes?
  • Do you often feel stressed or anxious?

Alarm Symptoms for wind and bloating

  • Are you experiencing abdominal pain?
  • Is your bloating constant (distension)?
  • Are you experiencing other symptoms i.e. blood or mucus in your stools?
  • Are you passing stools that are difficult to flush away?
  • Do you suffer from constipation or vomiting?
  • Have you unintentionally lost weight?
  • this a continuing problem i.e. has it lasted longer than 12 weeks?

If any alarm symptoms are identified or symptoms are experienced on a frequent or permanent basis it may indicate a more serious problem that would require further investigation from a GP.
